Your tooth enamel is an essential part of your smile. Little did you know, it helps you in many ways. Our dentist, Dr. Letitia M. Williams, would like to teach you all about tooth enamel so you can better understand your smile. To teach you, she would like to share some tooth enamel facts. Those facts are:
-Tooth enamel is the hard, outer shell of the teeth. It is the hardest tissue in the human body.
-It is possible to change or damage the tooth enamel. In fact, acid and bacteria can wear the tooth enamel down and cause enamel erosion and cavities. Dark foods and beverages can also stain the tooth enamel, taking the whiteness out of it.
-It is possible to repair tooth enamel. However, because it’s not living tissue, it cannot be regrown or regenerated. Your dentist will likely need to repair the tooth enamel with a dental restoration if the damage is extensive enough.
-Fluoride can strengthen the tooth enamel and make it a tougher shell.
-You can protect your tooth enamel by avoiding sugary, acidic and high-carbohydrate foods and drinks. You can also protect your tooth enamel by exposing it to fluoride regularly and by covering it with dental sealants.
